Steppe Stools and Tables
The Steppe range investigates the idea of a 2 dimensional material coming to life as a 3 dimensional object.
Each piece utilises geometry to create a simple design out of flat sheet material such as ply, mdf or acrylic. The range comprises a large stool, side table and coffee table with options for both Concave and Convex shapes.
They are stackable and multifunctional, with the top of one interlocking within the bottom of another allowing for secure stacking. This design provides a unique interactive ‘mix and match’ quality that enables the customer to pick a unique colour range or material that suits their space, by utilising the concept behind the Steppe range. A small-scale portable stool for commercial applications will be the next addition to the range.
The stools are also hollow so they can be turned upside down and used as a vessel or storage container. When not in use they can be stacked against a wall or used as a screen or room divider. The next step in the design development of this range is to create a solid base and a removable lid as an option so that they can be used as storage as an additional feature.
This form could be produced in a number of different materials and could be made in a variety of geometric shapes. The design allows for variation through the layering of different colours and materials, with a standard thickness. I am looking at producing this piece with both ply with different veneers and clear and coloured acrylic to demonstrate this.
The market for this design is both commercial/ hospitality and residential. There are a lot of stools and occasional tables on the market, but I feel that this design provides a unique interactive ‘mix and match’ quality that is lacking in a lot of the current options.
